The International Furniture Show 2008 is not far off: Milan, 16-21 April, with the best of Italian design and more...Preparations are underway for the 2008 Shows: in April over 220,000 square metres will host The International Furniture Show, Eurocucina, the new Office Show, The International Bathroom Show, The International Furnishing Accessories Show and the Satellite Show.

CERSAIE 2008

In a tradition that began in 2000, each year an internationally acclaimed architect or interior designer is commissioned to design the show’s poster: this year’s image has been created by Thom Mayne. Also this year a famous architect conceives the image of Cersaie, the Ceramic Tiles and Bathroom Furniture Exhibition (Bologna exhibition centre from 30 September to 4 October 2008). Thom Mayne received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Southern California in 1968 and his Master of Architecture from Harvard University in 1978. He was a founder of the Southern California Institute of Architecture and has held teaching positions at Columbia University, Harvard University (Elliot Noyes Chair, 1998), Yale University (Eliel Saarinen Chair, 1991), the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London.

BRUNO MUNARI

Bruno Munari: una delle figure più importanti del panorama mondiale del design, della grafica e dell’ arte del XX secolo.
Un designer pluri permiato, che ha segnato e disegnato la storia del design, dell’arredamento, delle abitudini degli italiani e del resto del mondo, risplendendo nel firmamento delle stelle più importanti del design.
I suoi oggetti, icone di stile, rappresentano da sempre momenti importanti e di svolta per il design e per gli stili di vita. Una persona, purtroppo ormai scomparsa, che ci ha lasciato un immenso patrimonio culturale che tutti gli amanti del design e dell’arte dovrebbero conoscere. Per chi lo desidera ci sono dei video del maestro, veramente interessanti e da non perdere: lezioni di design del 1992, tenute dallo stesso Bruno Munari presso l’università di disegno industriale IUAV di Venezia .
22 video, uno più interessante di un altro, 22 momenti da non perdere, 22 lezioni di design di uno dei più grandi designer italiani della storia. Per gli appassionati e per chi ha voglia di scoprire il design di Munari vi suggerisco anche una mostra, dedicata al grande maestro, visitabile fino al 10 Febbraio 2008, a Milano (Rotonda dell Besana).
Vi lascio con questa sua frase: “Quando qualcuno dice “questo lo so fare anche io”, vuol dire che lo sa rifare, altrimenti lo avrebbe già fatto”.

Triennale Design Museum

On the 6th of December 2007, the museum dedicated to the history of design opens in Milan. “What is Italian design?” and “The relationship between art and design” are the first topics dealt with.In Milan, work on the new Triennale Design Museum is finished. It began in 2004 with the construction of the Planning Library, the Historical Archive, and the Documentation Centre, and continued with the renovation of the areas designated for the Museum.The restoration of the Palace and arranging and adapting the Museum are the architectural projects of Michele De Lucchi.The particularly innovative architectural element of the Triennial Design Museum is its entrance across a bridge which allows the Museum to be both within the Triennial and an independent entity at the same time.

iPhone

iPhone by Steve Jobs: finalmente presentato il nuovo gioiello di casa Apple che sicuramente rivoluzionerà il mondo della telefonia.
Piccolo, leggero e dal design lineare, già fa parlare di sé e già il mondo è impazzito per averlo. Ieri, al Macworld 2007 di San Fransisco il nuovissimo iPhone ha finalmente visto la luce.
Un ampio schermo touchscreen (utilizzabile senza pennino), anima di tutto l’iPhone, dal quale sarà possibile fare tutto: scrivere messaggi con una tastiera virtuale, scegliere brani musicali, navigare in internet (wi-fi), fare fotografie, vedere film, sfogliare foto, individuare uno Starbucks su una mappa, e telefonargli direttamente da iPhone … tutto racchiuso in un piccolissimo accessorio alla moda dal design firmato, come per l’ iPod e l’ iMac, da Jonathan Ive.
Un “tre in uno” fantastico che senza dubbio segnerà una nuova generazione, un po’ come ha già fatto l’iPod, diventando icona trendy, dal design accattivante ma semplice. Un oggetto nato per caso (dal progetto del Mac Tablet, Steve Jobs si è innamorato del touchscreen e l’ha voluto utilizzare in un altro modo) che sta facendo parlare di sé da moltissimo tempo.
Ma i problemi non mancano; sembra infatti che la batteria duri poco, che il sistema utilizzato per la tastiera virtuale non sia il massimo della comodità (necessita, infatti, di un pò di pratica per abituarcisi), e che il display tenda a sporcarsi troppo facilmente. In ultimo molti utenti si lamentano per la mancata rimovibilità della batteria.

Memory Stick

SB memory sticks are handy for transferring files from one computer to another. In a departure from conventional tech design, Studio Oooms, a Dutch firm, makes memory sticks encased in actual wooden sticks, no two of them alike. I’m pretty sure that if Thoreau had written Waldon on a laptop, this is how he would have backed it up.
